Green Harvest

2008 INTERNATIONAL GREEN WINE COMPETITION-MAY 5, 2008

The first annual Green Wine Competition is being held in Santa Rosa, California, and is to be hosted by Honourary Chairman Paul Dolan fom Mendocino Wine Co. Entries are restricted to wines which must fall within one of the following categories:

  • Demeter certified biodynamic
  • Certified Organic (CCOF, Oregon Tilth, Ecocert)
  • Transitional (enrolled in the biodynamic or organic certification process)
    • Natural- Farming without the use of chemicals (International wines ONLY)

This is the most controversial category, as the word of the producer is the only requirement stipulated to be accepted into the competition. More to come.....

GREEN HARVEST-WHAT IS IT EXACTLY??

Today, more attention is being devoted to winegrape cultivation, especially when it comes to the broad category of sustainable farming practices. What exactly is sustainable farming and how do organic and biodynamic grape growing specifically influence a wines character and quality? We will be discussing these questions and others with wine producers who adhere to specific growing practices and why they have chosen to do so. This way we can provide you with the most accurate information possible.

Felton Road Winery, Bannockburn, Central Otago, New Zealand
-Since 2002, vineyards managed organically and biodynamically.

We met Blair Walter, winemaker for Felton Road, in February 2007 on the hill in Whistler, BC. He rode with us for the day while we were all in Vancouver for a Biodynamic Conference hosted by Liquid Art Fine Wines. Blair was part of a prestigious panel including Nicholas Joly and Thibault Liger-Belair-among others. Blair is an extremely knowledgeable, driven individual with a zest for life that is contagious-not to mention he makes fantastic wines. We hope to catch up with Blair on the slopes in New Zealand next time!

In the meantime, we are providing links below to websites which are invaluable resources regarding various farming practices.
